D.O.R.I.S.: The Detail Oriented Remote Investment Surveillance bot is an independent corporate drone programmed to protect financial assets by analysing decisions made against a crowd-sourced database of ‘right and wrong’ actions defined by the typical intergalactic investor. As well as flagging up poor decisions the bot will make suggestions about the best course of action both morally and from a business and fiscally sound perspective, drawing on data from over fifty billion possible scenarios sampled from a cross-section of mainstream trade negotiations and professions from across the galaxy since 2566. It is this function that has earned the D.O.R.I.S. bot the nickname ‘the conscience bot’ (or ‘Jiminy stick-it’ if you’re feeling less charitable).

A little larger than a family biscuit-tin, this robot hovers at human head-height using magnetic pulses in metallic, zero gravity environments, and by deploying a small rotor blade when experiencing gravity. It has an LCD display panel mounted into its chest plate. If it were possible for a non-sentient entity to look smug, you would say this one does a little. D.O.R.I.S. likes to be organised and on track. In fact it likes anything that will make it possible to fulfil its programming routine of protecting a financial investment such as cargo or a log book filled with unclaimed bounties. Anything that goes against this outcome falls automatically in the ‘dislikes’ camp - and this often includes the human it is programmed to monitor.

D.O.R.I.S. was created by author Kate Russell, as part of her science fiction novel written under official license to the game, Elite Dangerous. Elite: Mostly Harmless is an entertaining space romp following the misadventures of hapless commander, Angel Rose, who just can’t get anything right. D.O.R.I.S. is a constant annoyance with its sanctimonious and superior attitude. The ‘conscience bot’ considers all humans to be lacking in intellect and vastly inferior to itself, and has no qualms about voicing this opinion at every opportunity. Basically, D.O.R.I.S. doesn’t like you, but will help you fly the ship anyway because its programming prevents it from doing otherwise.
